    Embedded Circles

    SimultanProjekte 2021
    01.08.2021

I know what I’m doing, but I don’t know where this is taking me

and time has never felt more circular.

“There is in these two arts — dance and calligraphic poetry — a similar defiance of form, a similar desire to attack it in order to expand it to infinity. But where dance immediately disintegrates before the spectator, writing inscribes itself in duration, even if there can be no two readings of “Mouvements” that are the same… Dance collapses the difference between life and art more easily than writing, for the body resists the “stickiness” of words that Michaux deplored (contre la colle). The body doesn’t aspire to fix itself in a form: it is a succession of ways of being. In the sign of a movement, signified and signifier join.”
*quoted in Parish, Henri Michaux, translation from the French by Peter Schwenger

    wrists flicking, knees buckling,
scraping and mapping the floor with reverence for
    the immeasurable sky, light, plane.
scrape and draw a line, use a center
of your body as an anchor —
to create that round fullness of a perfect curve.

you must feel the roundness as satisfaction,
pass through the anchors of the grid
    with confidence and direction.
a circle always knows its relation to the line
